It is important for you to understand your financial responsibilities when registering for classes at MSU Denver.
PAYMENT DEADLINE
- Full payment of tuition and fees is due by the payment deadline. Any unpaid balance will incur a 4% service charge. To avoid the 4% service charge you must either:
- Pay in full by the payment deadline (see available payment methods),
- Enroll in a Payment Plan by the payment deadline
- If you are a financial aid student – have your financial aid awarded by the payment deadline.
- Financial aid and sponsored students must be awarded by the payment deadline to avoid a 4% service charge.
- Changes in registration that result in additional tuition and fees not paid by the payment deadline, may incur a 4% service charge.
BASIC FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- You are responsible for verifying the balance of tuition and fees:
- Log in to the Student Hub portal and select the “Student Financial Services” Tab.
- Click on “Account Summary by Term” to view and verify your tuition and fees charges.
- DO NOT WAIT FOR A BILL. If you have any questions about the charges or need to request a bill, please feel free to contact our office.
- YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DROPPING CLASSES BY THE PUBLISHED DROP DEADLINES IF YOU DO NOT PLAN TO ATTEND. Failure to do so may result in charges incurred on your student account. Specific refund dates for classes can be found on your Student Detail Schedule on the Student Hub.
If you do not fulfill your financial obligations by published deadlines:
- A 4% service charge will be assessed on any unpaid balance after the payment deadline.
- A 1.5% service charge will be assessed to any unpaid balance on the 7th working day of each month thereafter (See Important Dates).
- Accounts not paid in full by the payment deadline, are considered delinquent. A Balance Due Hold will be placed on those accounts with balances greater than $2000.00. Balance Due Hold will prevent:
- Registration for current or next semesters.
- Release of diploma.
- After the end of the semester, delinquent accounts will be turned over to a collection agency in accordance with Colorado law, and collection fees of up to 40% will be added to your account balance. The collection agency may report delinquent accounts to the national credit bureau.

REGISTRATION CONTRACT
It is important that you know about your financial responsibility in relation to MSU Denver even before you register for classes. Students electronically sign the Financial Responsibility and Promissory Note Agreement (FRA) every time they enroll in a class. The official FRA statement can be found below.
Each time you Add/Drop classes you are electronically agreeing to the terms of the Metropolitan State University of Denver Financial Responsibility and Promissory Note Agreement. By doing so you acknowledge that you understand the Metropolitan State University of Denver is advancing value to you in the form of educational services; that your right to Add/Drop classes is expressly conditioned upon your agreement to pay the University pursuant to the Agreement; and that you have read, understand, and agree to pay the University pursuant to the Agreement.
As a student, you will pay all tuition, fees, fines, and other costs imposed by the University. If any of those charges remain unpaid, you agree to reimburse us the fees of any collection agency, which may be based on a percentage at a maximum of 40% of the debt, and all costs and expenses, including, but not limited to, reasonable attorneys’ fees, collection agency fees, and court costs we incur in such collection efforts.
When you register for classes, spaces in classes are reserved for you. Decisions about how many class sections to offer and other commitments of instructional resources are made based on the enrollment data provided after the registration process is complete. Other students may be closed out of a preferred section if the last available space is reserved for you.
In exchange for the University’s commitment of resources on your behalf, you assume a responsibility to:
- pay the fees assessed for those classes
- drop your courses via the online Student Hub portal, prior to the start of the term, if you are unable to attend so that the class spaces may be released and made available to other students.
The University will not automatically cancel your registration for non-payment or non-attendance. Therefore, if you decide not to attend the Metropolitan State University of Denver, it is imperative that you drop any courses you are registered in.
If you do not request that your registration be canceled through the Student Hub, your name will appear on the class rosters, and you will remain responsible for full tuition and fees until such time as you drop your courses. If you are still on the final rosters for the term, you will receive grades of “F” for the courses in which you were registered.
Please keep your part of the registration contract. If your plans change and you cannot attend, you must drop your courses prior to the refund deadline for the term in order to allow other students access to your class spaces. Drop dates and deadlines can be found on the Student Hub on your Student Detail Schedule. Remember, non-attendance does not constitute dropping your courses; you will remain responsible for full tuition and fees.
BURSAR HOLDS

HOW DOES THIS IMPACT ME?
Students with a Balance Due Hold will not be allowed to register for the next semester. This hold also prevents certain services from academic advisors. Your admission application will not be processed until the hold is resolved.
HOW DO I RESOLVE THIS HOLD?
OPTION 1:Pay your balance down to $2000 or less.
OPTION 2: Use future financial aid funding to pay for your current outstanding balance (only if you qualify). Please contact the Financial Aid Office to see if you qualify for a “Lift Encumbrance”.
Note: Student’s enrolled in payment plans must still pay their balance to $2000 or less to be able to register for courses.
Returned payments: If a payment resulting in the lifting of a Balance Due Hold is returned, all future registration will be cancelled.
HOW DOES THIS IMPACT ME?
If you have this hold, it means that your account was forwarded to a collections agency. Students with a Collection Hold will not be allowed to register for the next semester. This hold also prevents certain services from academic advisors. Your admission application will not be processed until the hold is resolved.
IMPORTANT: You will not be able to pay with MSU Denver. You must pay with your collection agency.
HOW DO I RESOLVE THIS HOLD?
Pay your balance in full through a collection agency. If you don’t know your collection agency, please contact us.
HOW DOES THIS IMPACT ME?
Pre-pay Hold is placed on the student’s account as a result of the previous bankruptcy discharge. This hold prevents registration for a subsequent semester following a discharge through bankruptcy.
HOW DO I RESOLVE THIS HOLD?
STEP 1: Make a pre-payment based on the number of credit hours you plan to register for in the upcoming semester (contact us to get an estimate).
STEP 2: Sign a Pre-Pay Agreement Form (sent upon request) and send it back to the Office of the Bursar.
USE FINANCIAL AID: If you are eligible for financial aid, you do not need to pre-pay on your own. Ask our Financial Aid Office if you are eligible for a Lift Encumbrance. Lift Encumbrance can be used instead of the pre-payment process.
HOW DOES THIS IMPACT ME?
This hold indicates that you have an active payment plan with MSU Denver. This hold DOES NOT restrict registration, transcripts, advising, or diploma release. It’s there only to indicate that you are enrolled in a payment plan.
HOW DO I RESOLVE THIS HOLD?
No need to resolve this hold.
